Learn to Sail and Race on the St.
Croix River!
The first youth sailing program kicks off on the St. Croix. The St.
Croix Sailing School (SCSS) is a brand new non-profit sailing
organization on the shores of the St. Croix River near downtown Hudson.
The SCSS is all about promoting the growth of junior sailing in our
area. Participants are expected to come from Western Wisconsin and the
Eastern Twin City Metropolitan Area. The SCSS is the sixth youth sailing
school in our region.
Classes will be held weekly.
Weeklong classes are expected to begin June 15, 2009. Classes will be
held Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Sailing builds skills, character and sportsmanship
Focused on children and teens from the ages of six or seven and
continuing through high school, the SCSS program is founded with the
belief that sailing is unique in developmental opportunities for young
people. In addition to the sheer fun of learning to sail while
developing life-long boat handling and sailboat racing skills, sailing
builds character through its time-honored emphasis on self-reliance,
teamwork and sportsmanship.
Affordable access and safety are priorities.
Affordable access to sailing is a priority for the SCSS. Fees for the
school will be kept as low as possible since boats and equipment will be
paid for through donations. Sailing scholarships will be provided for
those needing financial aid. Safety is the top priority for the school.
All instructors and staff will be required to complete US Sailing
Instructor Training and American Red Cross First Aid/CPR Training. A
waterfront director will staff shore facilities while classes are on the
water monitoring weather radar at all times.
Proven US Sailing curriculum engages young people.
The SCSS will use structured curriculum developed by US Sailing, the
governing body of sailing. The program is designed to engage young
people in fun and entertaining ways while delivering the lessons that
produce skilled sailors. Students will find a very positive environment
where everyone is respected and challenged, yet encouraged.
Three top sailboats will be used
Three of the best youth training and racing sailboats will be used in
SCSS programs. The 8’ Optimist Dinghy is designed to teach sailing to
kids and is used worldwide. The 14’ Club 420 is also used worldwide as a
junior trainer and a boat of choice for junior sailors through high
school and college. The Laser is the most popular sailboat used by top
young athletes for instruction and racing at every level. Laser sailors
must furnish their own boats that may be stored at the SCSS facilities.
Donations are being sought for boats and scholarships
The SCSS is seeking donations from companies and individuals to fund the
purchase of sailboats and equipment and for scholarships for sailing
school students needing financial assistance.
